51-year-old newspaper deliveryman Yoshio Yoda was arrested by Osaka police and accused of stealing women’s raincoats, with “kappa” being specifically what he was after, which are ponchos worn over the clothing during heavy rains.

Yoda would apparently stalk women who rode bikes, or would search for bikes with children’s seats or that had feminine colors, then filch any raincoat that may have been left in the basket.

According to Yoda, this thievery was compelling, as he was quoted as saying “I got as excited seeing women in raincoats as I did seeing women in lingerie”, with the “clinginess” of a moist kappa being one of its alluring traits.

Police investigated the culprit’s abode and happened upon about 360 raincoats, with 320~ of the items being stolen from between December 2013 and May 2022 – police gave the criminal the name “raincoat man”.

Going by that time frame, the total worth of Yoda’s stolen goods amounted to about ¥1.12 million (roughly $7,800).
